Dive Details

Depth, Visibility, and Temperature

Roatan offers diverse depths, from shallow reef dives at 10-18 meters (30-60 feet) to dramatic wall dives plunging beyond 40 meters (130+ feet). Visibility typically ranges from 24-40 meters (80-130 feet), with the best conditions from March to September. Water temperature stays pleasant year-round, ranging from 26-29°C (79-84°F), making a 3mm wetsuit sufficient for most divers.

Difficulty Level

Roatan caters to all skill levels. The island is famous for its gentle conditions, making it ideal for Open Water certification and beginners. Advanced divers will enjoy the deep walls, swim-throughs, and occasional current dives. The consistent conditions and abundance of dive operators make it an excellent destination for building experience.

Marine Life

The Mesoamerican Reef supports incredible biodiversity. Divers regularly encounter sea turtles, spotted eagle rays, moray eels, and schools of colorful reef fish. Seahorses hide among the sponges and coral, while groupers and barracuda patrol the walls. Roatan is particularly famous for its seahorse populations and the opportunity to see whale sharks during migration season (March-April). The coral formations feature massive barrel sponges, brain corals, and delicate sea fans.

Best Time to Visit

Roatan offers excellent diving year-round. The dry season (March-September) provides the best visibility and calmest seas. October through February brings occasional rain and slightly reduced visibility but fewer crowds. Whale shark sightings peak in March and April. Hurricane season (June-November) rarely impacts diving conditions significantly, though occasional storms may affect schedules.

What Makes It Special

Roatan combines world-class diving with exceptional value. The island offers over 100 mapped dive sites, from beginner-friendly reefs to advanced wall dives and wrecks. Sites like Mary's Place (a dramatic crack in the reef), the El Aguila wreck, and West End Wall showcase the diversity available. The laid-back Caribbean atmosphere, affordable prices, and short boat rides to sites make Roatan a favorite for extended dive trips and certification courses.
